Region: Punjab, India

Youth migration from Punjab, India is a significant issue that has been ongoing for several years. The primary reason for migration is a lack of employment opportunities in the state. Punjab is an agrarian state, and while agriculture is still the primary occupation, it has not been able to provide enough employment opportunities for the growing population. Punjab has always faced the issue of youth migration to other countries, particularly Canada. The massive amount of brain drain raises issues of suitable socio-economic environments and employment opportunities for the youth of the state. The current unemployment rate of the country is 4.8% and surprisingly the unemployment rate in Punjab is 7.3%. With such a level of unemployment rate, Punjab is organizing events like Punjab State Lottery and Lottery Sambad to meet the financial requirement of the people. The high unemployment rate can be attributed to the crisis in the agricultural sector with the farmers leaving the field and negligible manufacturing firms. Most of the manufacturing firms that were present in Punjab have shifted to neighboring states. In addition to that, the IT sector is still in its embryo stage and such scenarios have left the youth of the state in a terrible condition. According to many reports, each year, more than 1.25 lakh youngsters migrate from Punjab to other countries. The migration of the youth has reached a point where many villages of Punjab have an older population than the younger population. If the trend continues, soon Punjab will become a state with a high old population.

The youth in Punjab are highly skilled and educated, but they struggle to find jobs that match their qualifications. As a result, many of them are forced to migrate to other states in search of employment. The most popular destination for Punjab's youth is the National Capital Region (NCR) around Delhi.

Another reason for youth migration from Punjab is the lack of infrastructure development and industrial growth in the state. The state has not been able to attract significant investments in industries that can provide employment opportunities. The state government has taken steps to promote the industry, but these efforts have not yielded significant results.

The migration of youth from Punjab has several adverse effects on the state's economy and society. The state loses its talented and educated youth, which can have long-term implications for its growth and development. The youth who migrate often end up in low-paying jobs in the informal sector, which does not provide job security or social security benefits. This can lead to exploitation and poor living conditions.
