This project will enable us to support 200 poor women from Gikomero, a rural area of the Gasabo District, with pigs that they can raise and breed for a source of income. Each woman will also benefit from health, socio-cultural, and business skills training so that they can become economically and socially empowered. The goal of this project is to allow women to acquire a steady source of income which will improve their financial standing and help them move out of poverty.
Challenge
In the Gikomero Sector of the Gasabo District, the poverty rate is 15.8% and the extreme poverty rate is 4.5%. Given these conditions, women are extremely dependent on their husband's income. This can lead to a power imbalance and gender based violence in the home. In this area, women have difficulty accessing resources and education to move out of poverty and become financially independent. This project will allow 200 women to generate a sustainable income and take control of their lives.
Long-Term Impact
This project will educate and support 200 women which will allow them to break the cycle of poverty and become financially independent. With a sustainable income, these women will be able to pay for their children to go to school, access health care resources, and provide nutritious meals to their children and family. Not only will this project impact the women directly, but it will have indirect effects on their families and community as a whole.
