In the backdrop of tough anti gay laws regionally, and a discriminatory media stance, the project aims to shed light and demystify myths, hate speech and stereotypes targeting the LGBTI community in Rwanda and the great lakes region through advocacy, human rights education, legal aid and provision of psychosocial support with the intent to curb violation of basic human rights of this community and need for provision of equal opportunities and protection of rights like any other law abiding citizen
Challenge
Through Government legislation and medias role sexual minorities are depicted as a very serious abnormal problem in the society, whilst religious groups have also come out strongly to reignite the debate of criminalizing homosexual activities in Rwanda citing that it is more geared at contaminating morals of society and spreading satanic practice. This project will support the creation of an enabling environment for the promotion and protection of the human rights of LGBTI individuals regionally.
Long-Term Impact
This project will support the creation of an enabling environment for the promotion and protection of the human rights of LGBTI individuals in Rwanda and the great lakes region, and will improve the quality of life for the LGBTI person. Confidence through knowledge within this stigmatized community will be embedded to the beneficiaries of the project enabling them to be gay rights defenders.
