EcoLogic aims to support rural Guatemalan farmers with the development and expansion of beekeeping and honey production that benefits both their families and the environment. Beekeeping can also help build sustainable, resilient livelihoods. By providing supplies and technical assistance we are improving the ability of local families to maintain sustainable beekeeping. With this project, we seek to establish 200 new beehives and provide supplies and technical support to 100 new beekeepers.
Challenge
As poverty is disproportionately high in rural communities in Guatemala, many families turn to unsustainable streams of income. In many cases, communities understand and value the importance of maintaining a healthy ecosystem, but have very limited means to seek income-generating activities that are also sustainable. For example, rural and indigenous peoples in Guatemala are faced with the choice of cutting down trees and putting food on the table or maintaining the trees and going hungry.
Long-Term Impact
Because beekeeping is a sustainable option for income stability, as it can be harvested year-round, it has become an increasingly attractive source of income for rural and Indigenous Guatemalans. The project will help establish 200 new beehives, and therefore, increase sustainable practices in those communities. At the same time, it will reduce pressure on standing forests by minimizing the need to use land in an unsustainable way.
