Since 1976, HIC has been working globally for the right to adequate housing and against forced evictions. In Latin America and Mexico, we confront the effects of housing policies focused on the purchase of housing through credit for sectors inserted into the formal economy, which leaves out the majority of the population. Our work includes the proposal of new public policies to confront the situation and the defense of the most vulnerable people against the violation of their right to housing.
Challenge
The work will be carried out in Mexico and its capital, which every year expels 20 thousand people, due to very high housing prices that can amount to up to 61% of their salary. At the same time,7 thousand find it as their only solution, moving to precarious settlements. Housing affordability is marked by inequality and this is one of the main problems that the project addresses by focusing on public policy proposals to diversify housing options and on the legal assistance of vulnerable people.
Long-Term Impact
For HIC-AL, the defense of cases is not an isolated support, but a part of a broad strategy that seeks to advance the realization of the right to adequate housing. In the long term, we hope to be able to offer assistance to a greater number of people, make progress in the number of lawsuits in favor of the right to housing, which today in Mexico are less than 10, train more groups about their rights, increase the visibility of the problem, and achieve progressive public policies.
