More children with severe Cerebral Palsy (CP) as a result of abuse are abandoned by family and placed by the Taiwan government in residential nursing homes, usually populated by the elderly. The Taiwan Love and Hope International Charity is establishing a startup Children's Home that can legally accommodate 10 children (0-12 years old) with severe disabilities so that they do not end up neglected in a nursing home. The goal is to rescue, love, and provide them efficient healthcare services.

Challenge

Taiwan will become a super-aged society by 2026. Charitable funding efforts are currently focused on the elderly population. Unfortunately, Taiwan also has a growing number of abandoned children with severe cerebral palsy as a result of physical abuse. The abandoned children are institutionalized in elderly nursing homes as young as 2 years old. The children almost always end up neglected in the nursing home because of the severity of their neuromuscular disability and incapacity to communicate.

Long-Term Impact

1) Children with severe CP when pulled out of an elderly nursing home have a better life expectancy and opportunity to receive prioritized healthcare management services; 2) Placing them in a child-friendly environment that addresses their unique developmental needs create better opportunities for rehabilitation and positive development; 3) Children with severe CP are not hopeless; 4) The success of this startup community-based home can signal the potential for more homes in the future.
