Mexico has a deep educational problem. Not all kids have the same opportunities and neither do they have a responsible adult guiding them and taking care of them. In Peraj we belief that inherent in every child is incredible potential. We partner up elementary school kids with university students to meet twice a week to do activities that will help develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of both mentors and mentees.
Challenge
Children in Mexico hardly continue all the way in their education. Only 24 out of 100 children that start elementary school reach high school. The causes are varied but for the most part are due to the lack of positive role models in their lives, or just because they don't see any future in studying. Their environment is closed off and they don't see studying as a way to a better life.
Long-Term Impact
By partnering with parents/guardians, Universities, and others in the community we have found that the children working with their mentors have higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships, there is also avoidance of risky behaviors as well as educational success. We have seen it over the course of 15 generations of Peraj mentors and mentees. We know our mentoring program works, kids want and deserve to have better futures and achieve success in life.
