Terra Renaissance promotes social economic development and peaceful coexistence of South Sudanese refugees and Ugandan host communities towards sustainable self-Reliance. The refugee community lacks access to land for cultivation of much needed foods such as vegetables and grains hence the more dependency on humanitarian food aids whose rations have dwindled of late leading to high risk of undernutrition, slow growth in children, risk of illnesses and low productivity as a hungry person.
Challenge
The Ukraine crisis that started in February, 2022 immediately brought inflationary pressures to Uganda making the refugees to have less income to spend on food whose prices are rising and with the war in Ukraine having no sign of an end will only be exacerbated further as food production in Uganda will be lower due to lack of access to inputs such as fertilisers and no/slow government measures to tackle the issue.
Long-Term Impact
The women and men will increase their level of income leading to improved access to better nutritious foods, improved standards of living for refugees and host communities alike, economic dependency leading to gender equality, self-reliance and subsequently reduction of poverty. The increase in income will bring a direct positive change in access to Basic Human Needs such as food, clothing, and education for their children.
