Once a sparkling drainage area of 235 sq km came down to 50 sq.km in ~1970s is currently in 2023 is only around 5.5 sq.km due to encroachment by an engineering college, an arts college, a hospital, a sewage treatment plant, solid waste disposal grounds, MRTS, NIOT buildings and a firewood wholesale market.

Pallikaranai Marshland is one of the significant groundwater recharging areas of south chennai and is a habitat for various birds. A study by the CMDA found that there was a potential to restore 30 sq km of the marshlands, but this, of course, was not followed up with any action. As even the state government is filling the Pallikaranai marshland in Sholinganallur, to make way for more construction in the area. Construction over waterbodies has proven to be one of the main reasons for the city’s massive flooding in 2015.
