Every day, more than 1,700 dogs and cats are killed in our nation's shelters because they don't have safe places to call home. But people like you are changing that. Animal shelters, local stakeholders, lifesaving groups, and individual community members are working together to take collective responsibility for at-risk pets right where they live. Together, we can create compassionate no-kill communities nationwide for pets and the people who care for them.

Challenge

Every day, more than 1,700 dogs and cats are killed in our nation's shelters because they don't have safe places to call home.

Long-Term Impact

Best Friends and our 3,100+ shelter and rescue partners are saving lives and achieving no-kill at an unprecedented rate. A no-kill United States is in sight. When Best Friends was founded in 1984, an estimated 17 million cats and dogs were killed in America's shelters each year. Since then, much progress has been made. In the last four years, as Best Friends has expanded its national reach and network, and as the no-kill movement has gathered momentum, we've made tremendous progress.
