This project seeks to plant 15,000 Sheanut trees/Vitellaria Paradoxa (locally called EKUNGUR) across Katakwi district by end of 2022. This will improve the health, incomes and nutrition of the local communities. Shea nut butter has varied uses including preventing sun burns, fighting fungal infections, promoting growth of new cells, and helping soothe conditions like eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis.


Challenge

Massive cutting of indigenous trees for charcoal burning is slowly turning areas of Katakwi district in Eastern Uganda into bare ground. The most endangered tree species are Shea-nut tree/Vitellaria Paradoxa it produces high quality charcoal. Shea butter is anti-inflammatory and helps soothe conditions like eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis. Its an antioxidant, antifungal, and antibacterial useful in anti-aging and fighting fungal infections. promotes cell regeneration, prevents hair breakage.

Long-Term Impact

Improved livelihood and nutrition through alternative source of income and food from shea-nut butter (locally called Alinyo). The shea nut butter will help in soothing conditions like eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis as well as anti-aging and reducing fungal infections, promoting cell regeneration and helping to prevent hair breakage among other uses. It will also help in environmental protection, maintaining Soil fertility since it fixes nitrogen to the soil.
