Through the collaborative project in Phang Nga, we work with a number of dedicated local organizations on a sustainable community development project focused upon education and preventative health. The project provides educational support to children and adults, teacher training with emphasis on girls and women, and community health education outreach and resources and workshops for health professionals.
Challenge
The tsunami of 2004 devastated thousands of communities along the coastline of Thailand and this project has transitioned from the initial disaster recovery program at the request of the local community. There is currently a lot of development happening which brings challenges and opportunities. There is a need to empower the community by increasing opportunities for growth and development, to ensure growth is sustainable, and achieve better job security, education, healthcare, and welfare.
Long-Term Impact
The project improves immediate education and preventative health-care interventions, builds local educational and health capacities and facilities, helps the community to empower themselves, and increase their opportunities and ability to achieve improved and more sustainable job security, education, healthcare, and welfare. In the long term, the project will phase over to the community and the collaborative partners, once they feel prepared to continue independently.
