MAITS' digital COVID response programme will provide life-saving techniques to reduce the risk of respiratory infections in children and adults with disabilities around the world, preventing hospitalisation & infection; providing physiotherapy and mental health support for those with special needs during lockdown. As Coronavirus spreads worldwide, it is critical that we continue to reach the most vulnerable in resource-poor settings, ensuring no child or adult with disabilities gets left behind.

Challenge

People with disabilities are very vulnerable to COVID-19. Children with cerebral palsy or dysphagia are at high risk of respiratory problems which can lead to infections, hospitalisation & even death. As there is a global shortage of ventilators, people with these disabilities will not be given priority for treatment. By training staff & parents in simple, life-saving techniques & issues related to COVID-19 and mental health support, this project will save lives globally in this pandemic.

Long-Term Impact

This project will save lives. We will support 750 children and adults with developmental disabilities and 750 carers, preventing the deterioration of their mental & physical health. We will reduce respiratory problems, malnutrition and relieve the pressure on hospitals. Families and professionals will build local knowledge, sharing skills to support people with disabilities during the crisis and in the future. These resources will be incorporated into our face-to-face training programmes.
