We believe no human should bear the burden of climate change because of poverty or lack of access to climate-smart technologies. And yet these are the factors that have compelled rural communities to continue to destroy their natural resources in search of livelihoods. The People4Nature Green Climate Fund seeks to provide the community around Kaya Fungo Sacred Site, other sacred sites, and rural communities with climate-smart technologies to adapt and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

Challenge

The community around Kaya Fungo forest and other forests hosting sacred sites are in danger of being lost because of changes in climate and the pressure of adjacent communities. Low farm production has forced these communities to rely more on natural resources for wood fuel, building materials and charcoal burning. Encroachment and poaching of forest resources have put the first and largest Mijikenda shrine, and other sacred sites on the verge of extinction.

Long-Term Impact

These climate-smart technologies will, in the long run, reduce the pressure and dependency of the community on forests and other natural resources.
