Hans Verdonschot,60, a psychiatric nurse and environmentalist is setting off from Holland on an epic 11,000km journey to India on public transport to raise money for Calcutta Rescue (CR). He'll arrive in Kolkata three weeks later having travelled across 10 countries. Hans hopes his trip will raise Euros 11,000 ($12000 approx) for CR's work but also wants to inspire others, including the 650 youngsters from the slums that CR is helping to educate. Please help Hans to make his goal a reality.
Challenge
One-third of the total population of Kolkata (4.5 million) lives in slums. Many children live in the slums and on the streets of Kolkata. Kolkata is one of the world's cities most at risk from climate change and Calcutta Rescue is already supporting refugees from nearby coastal areas driven out by rising sea levels and increasingly extreme typhoons.
Long-Term Impact
Calcutta Rescue provides free quality healthcare & health awareness to slum dwellers, and education to slum and street children. It uplifts the living standards of the slum communities by providing clean drinking water, toilets, and proper concrete lanes to walk. It is working to minimise the NGO's environmental impact and to help its beneficiaries adapt to the effects of climate change. The campaign will help the charity to continue its work and serve more people like slum people.
