This project aims to support the food and educational needs of 1000 residents at Eleonas Refugee Camp in Athens, Greece with a total population of 3000. A supplementary food basket will be distributed on a monthly basis to the most vulnerable families ensuring that nobody goes hungry. Also numerous educational programs are attended by hundreds of children and adults since 2016 made available with the help of 1500+ volunteers who have offered 350 000 hours of support to the community
Challenge
The majority of the 3000 residents (1200 children) at Eleonas Refugee Camp no longer receive the EU cash support and many are struggling to meet even basic food and hygiene needs. Among them are families with several children and some very vulnerable people in constant need of medical, social-psychological care. Other than support with basic needs residents should have access to education, the most important tool for them to achieve, self-reliance, social integration and build a better future
Long-Term Impact
The food basket initiative is necessary to prevent hunger and alleviate suffering in the short/medium-term. On the other hand the education programs which are customized for the needs of refugees, have a significant and lasting impact. Children who have missed years of schooling and went through so much, must have the same opportunities as their peers in Europe while adults need language and skill-development to access the labor market and achieve self-reliance integrated in society.
