Childhood cancer is not a death sentence. In Ukraine 1000 kids are diagnosed with cancer every year. 7000 kids are hospitalized throughout a year including new patients, patients who continue treatment and who have a recurrence. Their chances for survival depend on the availability of medication and facilities as well as on their emotional condition. The project of Zaporuka will provide these kids with treatment (medicines and equipment) and relief (psychological and entertainment activities).

Challenge

The healthcare in Ukraine was always underfinanced because of economic crises and corruption. Now Ukraine faces economic problems and military intervention that have caused significant budget cuts everywhere, including the healthcare sector. As a result, in the foreign practice more than 70% of children with this diagnosis recover. In Ukraine the mortality statistics is much higher and some of the reasons for it are absence of medicines, facilities and delayed treatment.

Long-Term Impact

The ultimate goal of Zaporuka is to contribute to the approximation of the general level of medical assistance for children in Ukraine to the best world standards and thus to the increase of their long-term survival and their quality of life after the disease.
