In 2019, FAN launched DC's first Youth Peer Operated Center, serving up to 110 children, youth, young adults, and parents/caregivers across all the Center's activities. The new center, staffed by certified youth peer specialists, will house our after school program, drop-in hours for youth ages 16-25, recreational activities, support groups, mental health workshops, and targeted case management, support, and referral for youth and their families.
Challenge
Adults who spent time in the foster care system experience deep inequalities; these include disproportionate risk of homelessness, poverty, and contact with the juvenile and criminal justice system. FAN works to end this cycle of inequality by offering key compensatory supports beginning in adolescence.
Long-Term Impact
1. Support youth who have had contact with the child welfare system to develop positive relationships with adults and peers. 2. Reduce foster care placement disruptions for participants and reduce re-entries into the foster care system for families once they are reunited. 3. End the often multi-generational cycle of foster care placement and child welfare involvement by ensuring that our alumni have the tools and supports to raise their own children.
