This project will ensure consistent monthly supply of sanitary pads to 1000 refugee girls in their final year of primary schooling. Each girl will receive one pack of pads monthly over 12 months period which will help these girls complete and sit for their final primary leaving exams. In 2018, more than 200 refugee girls at Adjumani could not sit for their primary leaving examinations due to lack of sanitary pads and poor performance among girls was attributed to absenteeism during menstruation.
Challenge
According to Uganda's Ministry of Education 2018 'Education Response Plan for Refugees', only 41% of refugee girls are enrolled in Primary school while 53% have dropped out of school due to poverty and lack of sanitary towels. In 2018, over 200 girls in Adjumani settlement dropped before sitting their final primary leaving exams while 20% attributed their poor academic performance to absenteeism during menstruation due to lack of sanitary pads and fear of stigma and teasing from the boys .
Long-Term Impact
The project will provide sanitary pads to 1000 refugee girls allowing them to complete their primary education and realize improved academic performance. Overall there will be reduced school drop out of girls and increased number of refugee girls completing primary schooling in Adjumani. Increased self esteem among girls and more positive support of girls reproductive health issues among boys/men.
