This project will fund the relaunch our core programs for Maasai girls in the Loita Hills region of Kenya now that schools are re-opening from COVID-19 closures. Specifically, the project will increase Maasai girls' access to education by activating local leadership to support and champion girls' education, enrolling children in primary school and working with schools and communities to add on secondary day schools, providing low-cost secondary education to thousands.

Challenge

In the Loita Hills of Kenya, two barriers often create insurmountable challenges to girls' education. There are only two day secondary schools in the entire 646-square-mile region, and longstanding cultural norms encourage girls to marry early and take up domestic work. School closures necessitated by COVID-19 make girls more vulnerable.

Long-Term Impact

Educated girls have much brighter futures; their health, income and ability to drive their own lives improves. A ripple continues that breaks the cycle of poverty and helplessness. Keeping girls in school is a leverage point that that empowers girls and impacts generations and entire communities.
