The natural beauty that attracts tourists to southern Mexico is due in large part to the presence of jaguars, which in their role as keystone and umbrella species keep these ecosystems balanced. Unfortunately, jaguars are seriously threatened. Animal Karma and Panthera have created the Jaguar Friendly Pledge, a certification that endorses tourist activities in order to encourage responsible and conscious tourism that promotes the conservation of jaguars and their habitat in Mexico.
Challenge
The continuos growth of tourism in southern Mexico (Mayan Riviera) has negatively impacted the wildlife and its habitat. We can see more and more buildings and less jungle. Habitat loss has a huge impact on the jaguar, and therefore in all the flora and fauna of the area, affecting and disrupting the entire ecosystem. Sadly, jaguars are heavily endangered, but you can help save this magnificent species by supporting the Jaguar Friendly Pledge project. It is time to stand up for the jaguar!
Long-Term Impact
Jaguars are essential to maintaining the Mayan Riviera pristine landscapes and healthy ecosystem. The importance of the conservation of the jaguar goes beyond saving a species since predators act as an umbrella species as they regulate the populations of other species, control pests and guarantee the proper functioning of ecosystems; by protecting them, it also indirectly protects several other species of plants and animals from the same habitat. We invite you to be a committed tourist!
