In our free certified Permaculture Design Courses, refugees and locals will learn how to design, live and work together to regenerate the land. Since 2015, nearly 1 million people have come through Lesvos in search of a better life, which has not been easy for the island's 85,000 inhabitants. By bringing these groups together, we will heal the land and facilitate integration and social acceptance in a deeply divided community.
Challenge
Nearly 14,000 refugees are living on the island of Lesvos. The infamous Moria refugee camp, the biggest and most disgraceful camp in Europe, recently burned to the ground, leaving thousands homeless and the land there charred and in dire need of regeneration. Overcrowding, horrible living conditions, huge bureaucratic delays, and negative environmental and social effects on the island are big problems for refugees and locals alike and heavily affect their relations.
Long-Term Impact
We will train 100 new permaculture designers and support their new projects on the island and wherever refugees might resettle. Our courses will have a direct and lasting impact on social integration, economic health, and environmental resilience, benefitting the community for the duration of the refugee crisis and beyond.
