This project aims to provide comprehensive, inclusive early childhood development services to young children with developmental delays and disabilities at risk of losing their developmental potentials during their first 6 years, from poor families in rural Rwanda. The project will help the healthy growth, development, and inclusion of 45 children under school age who will be identified in their community, contributing to a wider community inclusive development.
Challenge
In Ntarama sector of Bugesera district of Rwanda, there are more than 17,598 residents grouped into 3 cells and 22 villages. Children with developmental delays and disabilities from this community do not have access to inclusive early childhood development opportunities that can help them reach their full developmental potentials. Existing community structures do not consider specific needs of children with disabilities and this constitutes a significant barrier to inclusion in the community.
Long-Term Impact
The project will eradicate negative attitudes towards the capacities of children with disabilities among the community members, including the parents and school teachers. This will create an inclusive community where no child is left behind. By this, parents will change their mind and will be sending children to schools, or daycare centers. This will create an opportunity for 45 children on annual basis, to exercise their full potentials as other children in their community.
