Founded by a survivor, Unsilenced Voices' objective is to provide shelter and relief for victims of domestic abuse and sexual gender based violence in Ghana and Sierra Leone. Currently there are few, if any shelters or vocational centers protecting and educating women and girls about their rights. Unsilenced Voices is working with our partners to implement shelters, sensitization programs, legal assistance, vocational training, medical and counseling to women and girls in both countries
Challenge
Domestic violence is traditionally considered a family affair. Considerable family pressure is often mounted on the survivor for silence and not to seek external support, especially in rural areas, perpetuating the cycle of domestic violence. Many survivors are not aware of their rights. Sensitization of communities and surrounding areas is imperative to ending domestic abuse and sexual violence. Based on several interrelations with communities, our program to shift cultural beliefs is demanded.
Long-Term Impact
Domestic violence and GBV usually are strongly underreported mainly due to the absence of a rescue centre and the entrenched culture of secrecy in most communities. There are immeasurable results of implementation of our program. We will affect thousands of women and girls in Sierra Leone and Ghana to understand their rights and speak up about the abuse they have endured. With the help of our supporters, we can greatly diminish domestic abuse and sexual-gender-based violence
