This family-based music-art-sports group project will offer weekly activities for 3-12 year-old children with special needs during school semesters, to improve children's motor skills, physical fitness and social interaction in Taiwan. The participating children suffer from developmental delay, autistic spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, learning disorders, etc. This project enrolls kids' parents and siblings to optimize the family support.
Challenge
Contrary to normal children, children with special needs suffer developmental disadvantages from various diseases. Those delays are found mostly since 0 to 6 years old, and need assistance in time. Those developmental delays include cognition, fine/gross motor skills, self-care abilities, speech and verbal communication, social interaction, etc. Most of them have learning difficulties, communicating obstacles to make friends, and have even emotional disturbances or behavioral problems.
Long-Term Impact
Approximately 95 training sessions will be provided to minimally 2200 person times yearly to achieve aforementioned goals. This project will support approximately 135 families with special needs children/their siblings north-eastern Taiwan, where parents are less educated and less resourceful than parents in most western urban areas of Taiwan. The project will upgrade the sub-optimal care of special need kids to a higher standard and improve their families' quality of life.
