Located in one of the top twenty-five biodiversity hotspots, the project promotes the conservation, preservation and protection of six primate species including the nationally threatened Angolan colobus monkey and their disappearing coastal forest habitat. Programs focus on habitat conservation and community links, animal rescue/rehabilitation, and education. It is the only primate rehabilitation centre in East Africa and the only primate conservation organization operating in Kenya.
Challenge
The coastal forests of the area are a globally unique resource, high in biodiversity. They are threatened by deforestation from development and farming, and degradation of remaining forest area. This has a knock on negative impact to the wildlife living in this area, primates in particularly, including injuries and deaths from road traffic accidents (usually hit and run), electrocutions, poaching, illegal pet trade, poisoning, dog bites and snares. The organization responds to over 300 welfare
Long-Term Impact
By continuing reforestation activities this will ensure stability of all primate populations in Diani by restoring the local habitat and in return reduce human primate conflict, which is the main cause of primate mortality. In addition, a much needed income boost will ensure the center can continue its ongoing care and rehabilitation of monkeys who have been rescued and are receiving the essential care that will see them return to the wild, as well maintain our dedicated team on the ground.
