For more than 10 years, YUM has worked to increase the quality of children's education in Bukit Batu, Central Kalimantan, home to 19,000 inhabitants, most of them living with less than $2 per day. YUM's Community Library is the only library in the area and more than 500 children enjoy not only reading the books available but also the various educational activities offered. With your help, we can continue to enrich their lives through reading, ultimately promoting their intellectual development.
Challenge
YUM's working area in Central Kalimantan has a very low level of education. The poor economic situation and the lack of transportation in this remote area make education facilities very difficult to access and too costly for the 19,000 inhabitants. Expensive books, difficult access to the internet, unqualified teachers, shortage of books in school libraries make children lack the knowledge and skills necessary for future employment, and ultimately this keeps the cycle of poverty alive.
Long-Term Impact
The Kalimantan YUM library will improve the access to educational facilities and activities for approximately 500 children every month. YUM hopes to welcome more visitors in the future including youths, mothers, teachers and communities living around the library so as to further increase the knowledge and skills of the local community enabling them to focus on their education, find better jobs and ultimately rise out of poverty.
