The Saul Louis Community School (academic/vocational) will provide 315-350 students and 10 teachers with standard school supplies, proper facilities equipment, and a safe, physical environment, which will fuel quality learning, teaching and success. It will also equip the community's vocational students, currently studying music, and teachers with the instruments needed to produce highly skilled and trained professionals, who can earn a living providing services in their mountainside community.

Challenge

Less than 10% of the kids in our community attended school in the temporary school shelters. The shelters would get destroyed by hurricanes. Before the permanent school, children walked 1 hour to school with no food in their system most days. After constructing the permanent school, the community wants to provide consistent and quality education for students. We need supplies and equipment for 300+ students, a food pantry and stipends for 10 teachers.

Long-Term Impact

Before the school, 5-7% of the children attended school. The community suffered from high illiteracy. The literacy rate has increased 60-70% since the school's inception. Since 2007, over 3,200 students have been educated. Providing equipment & supplies for the permanent school & consistent compensation for teachers will result in quality education for the youth, both educationally & vocationally, for over 600 families. This will impact generations to come & improve quality of life for all.
