Blossoms of Guyana plans to donate a minimum of 300 books to provide literacy education for 300 primary school children who come from the poorest areas in Guyana. Blossoms will also provide three desktop computers to help support teachers in their work along with teaching supplies and learning aids to help support the education of students. Blossoms donations will also include school supplies for students and teaching supplies for teachers along with a printer for the school.
Challenge
Though Guyana's reading literacy rate is 92% of the population over age 15, the functional literacy is much lower. Despite this high level of reading literacy, significant portions of the Guyanese population have functional literacy resulting in a lack of employability and other socio-economic disadvantages. This ultimately results in weak educational system that prevents teachers from being able to teach and students to reach to full potential.
Long-Term Impact
This project will help to eradicate illiteracy for 300students living in Guyana allowing them to improve their educational and economic opportunities. We will address the low functional literacy plaguing schools by providing reading books for libraries and for classrooms. We will address inadequate access to technology by providing computers, and other media equipment. We will also look to provide internet to schools where needed.
