Thandanani was established to provide a secure and loving home for socially disadvantaged children. Having taken them out of the environment of the Zandspruit informal settlement, where they were abused and without hope, a good education is one of the key components of renewing that hope. We need to fund their education at a number of local schools, some of which render much needed specialized teaching, plus the transport costs to get them to school.

Challenge

South Africa has seen a huge migration of rural families moving to the cities looking for work and unfortunately not all finding it, giving rise to the establishment of informal settlements of destitute people. Zandspruit just outside Johannesburg is one such settlement with an estimated 100,000 inhabitants. Children are being rescued daily from this environment, many of whom have never been to school, and who will potentially resort to crime in adult life, and the downward spiral will continue.

Long-Term Impact

The children will leave us with a capability of being productive members of the community. Depending on their academic ability, many will graduate from high school and will be capable of enrolling for tertiary education, and will go on to a successful career and become a normal part of society.
