Freedom to Learn will support some of the most marginalised and vulnerable young children in the village of Kushadevi Nepal, by improving access to and quality of education. We will provide clean water and sanitation for the school, high quality teacher training, school meals for children who are hungry, and essential school materials and running costs for 1 year. We will also provide bikes to shorten long journeys to school and for their families to take goods to the local market on Saturdays.

Challenge

Growing up in Nepal can be very challenging both at home and at school. Home life is often turbulent, 82% of our students experience domestic abuse, and more than half our students experience alcoholism at home. Many students also work up to 6 hours each day outside of school child labour; alcoholism is experienced here too. Just over a quarter of all our students do not have access to safe drinking water. 370 children and their families will benefit from this project.

Long-Term Impact

Our previous similar projects show we can achieve magnificent results with this holistic approach: School attendance registers show an increase in Primary age attendance; on average up by 23.2% from 2014 to 2016, The girls drop-out rate has decreased from an average of 21.7% for over 12s, to 9% in 2016. 92% of students state that they feel more confident since participating in our project work and that they have improved access to education and increased self-esteem.
