The latest study of UNICEF in Nepal revealed that 81% of Nepal's population has no access to water labeled as "safely managed". That's about 24 Million people. Nepal Water for Health (NEWAH), an award winning nepalese NGO is developing and strengthening WASH (Water Sanitation and Hygiene) services and won't stop until everyone in the country, irrespective of gender, class, ethnicity or belief, is able to access their right to WASH. Support NEWAH and help achieving their mission.

Challenge

Safely managed drinking water: an improved source located on premises, available when needed and free of faecal and priority contamination (i.e. E.Coli = 0, arsenic <50ppb as per national standard for Nepal). A rarity in the lives of most Nepalese. Nepal is exposed to several recurrent hazards every year. This especially affects water systems. Rapid and unplanned urbanization, low per capita income coupled with inadequate preparedness, and extant vulnerabilities make the situation even worse.

Long-Term Impact

Previously underserved communities see a significantly decreased burden of WASH related diseases (health risk and time- and money-loss), economic opportunities (e.g. agriculture and livestock), improved access to education (increased school attendance among girls) and a lesser vulnerability of environmental threats. Emphasis is also being placed on influencing sectoral policies through research and advocacy in order to realize a sustainable long-term strategy on national level.
