The project aims to provide knowledge and skills development activities for 200 children from underprivileged families in Bulgaria. Through free summer activities in different locations, we will work to prevent children from dropping out of school and will help them fill the gaps in their knowledge. Your support will contribute to the organisation of Summer START academies in different locations and will cover costs related to the execution of the Academies such as food, training materials, etc.

Challenge

The socio-economic background of children in Bulgaria has a strong impact on their success in school. 47% of all students in the country are functionally illiterate - they cannot interpret the meaning of what they read (PISA 2018). During the school year 2019-2020, nearly 16,000 students dropped out of school. The opportunities for free activities for children remain very limited in low-income communities, especially in remote areas.

Long-Term Impact

Summer START Academies replicate the model of the Academy that was created by Teach For Bulgaria alumni. For the past 6 summers, motivated teachers have worked with children from the Roma community in Fakulteta, Sofia. We believe that every child should have access to quality education and motivated teachers. Through the dissemination of Summer START Academies, we will reach 200 students at risk of dropping out in various locations in Bulgaria and support them to stay in school.
