The project "Hands for life" aims at the construction of a neonatology department in the pediatric hospital L'Abbraccio in Sokponta (Benin). This structure will be used to monitor the health of infants who are premature, underweight or have specific infections or malformations and to make women aware of the importance of receiving medical treatment during and after gestation.Furthermore we want to implement health awareness activities in rural villages to prevent infectious disease and Covid-19.
Challenge
Sokponta little neonatal unit, built thanks to L'Abbraccio ngo and Cooperativa Minerva ngo, is the only unit that provides care for infants in life-threatening and premature infants from all social classes in the center of Benin. It has a capacity of 20 places (mother+child). However, in the last two years, demands increased more and more, thanks to the high quality of service and low costs. It is therefore vital to build a new unit to face the need and thus saving mothers' and children's lives.
Long-Term Impact
The hospital will be able to help more children, from all over Benin and from all social classes, in order to guarantee the right to life and health for every child. Sanitation awareness meetings will help to reduce complications during pregnancy and to prevent sanitation diseases. It can become a pilot project both in terms of quality and economic sustainability because thanks to the fees paid by the wealthiest families it will also be possible to support the hospitalization of poorer children.
