On August 14, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti causing major damages in Les Cayes. As of August 20, the Haitian Civil Protection reports over 2,189 deaths and 12,268 injured. This devastation, which left 75,000 families without healthcare access, was aggravated by the rains brought by Tropical Storm Grace. Our goal is to provide primary care to the largest number of people needing rehabilitation and prosthetics. We will prioritize people with disabilities and delivery of life-saving supplies

Challenge

The consequences of this devastating earthquake are still being assessed. However, among the various immediate needs, the scarce availability of trained personnel in hospitals and the lack of medical supplies to provide comprehensive care are the utmost priorities. Tous Ensemble Rehabilitation Center (FONTEN) has been the only clinic specialized in providing physical and occupational therapy, fabrication of prosthetics, orthotic and rehabilitation services in Les Cayes for the last five years.

Long-Term Impact

FONTEN will provide diagnostic and physical rehabilitation services to those affected by the earthquake, ensuring comprehensive treatment to at least 800 people to guarantee their recovery, autonomy and establishing a strong foundation for life-quality improvement. Rehabilitation and therapy will be possible with approximately 6,000 consultations in the upcoming months and with the provision of prostheses and orthoses for children and adolescents affected in their limbs.
