This Project will offer twice monthly sessions of story telling, puppet theatre and reading mediation to 3,000 elementary school children to to help recover the education they have lost through 18 months of school closures due to Covid. It will be delivered by 12 specially trained local high school children.
Challenge
Educational quality in Brazil is very poor: whilst it was the 7th largest economy in the world in 2012, it scored 54th out 65 in language testing according to PISA. In 2011 50% of all Brazilians had not read a book in the previous 3 months. The children of Eldorado in Brazil live in great poverty with very under-resourced schools which were closed for 18 months during the pandemic. Children who do not enjoy reading and using their imagination are unlikely to achieve.
Long-Term Impact
In evaluations done with head teachers and teachers, they have stated clearly that this project "increases the levels of reading and writing amongst their pupils", "makes them more interested in their classes", "increases their repertoire of games and songs, as well as improving their ability to express themselves" and "that the children respect the teenagers as they do their teachers." These benefits will be received by 3,000 elementary school children in the community of Eldorado in Brazil.
