Tonight, when the sun starts to set, please will you resist for a moment the urge to turn on your lights? Instead, watch as the gloom creeps through the room, and the deepening shadows slowly consume every corner of your home. At first, your eyes will compensate. But when the last rays of sunlight are gone, the darkness will be complete. And at that point, I ask you to try to imagine what it might be like to be one of the many children for whom this isn't a one-off. Please donate today.
Challenge
Picture yourself as 10 years old, with homework to do, with a book you want to read, with games you would like to play, with life to live. And imagine you have to ready yourself for bed without a light to guide you to your room, or to a toilet which is almost certainly outdoors, or a nightlight to ease you off to sleep. With no access to the modern mains 'grid' power, and no fuel for their kerosene lamps, for them, there will be no light until the sun starts to rise again.
Long-Term Impact
The gift of light is completely life changing. How do we know? The children tell us! "The solar light is so important to me and my brothers and sisters. I use my light for doing my studies, walking around the house, and finding things after dark. I feel safer and I enjoy my life more having my own solar light. I don't have to worry about not being able to see or do anything after dark, spill kerosene on my skin or breathe in its smoke. Solar is so much better." Jenna, Grade 6 PNG
