La Balsa works as an assistance site aimed at homeless children and adolescents. Currently, it is the only centre for overnight for girls in the City of Buenos Aires. Based on this reality, La Balsa focuses on generating a deeper focus, with a gender perspective, accompanying girls and adolescents in their empowerment. At the same time, La Balsa aids in constructing their role as free and independent women, providing them with reliable tools to fend for themselves.
Challenge
There are thousands of homeless children and young people in Buenos Aires. They, and their families if they have one, are exposed to extreme social vulnerability. As a result of the pandemic, the poverty rate in Argentina increased to at least 50%, and child poverty is at 60%. These facts likely contribute to the growth of the number of homeless people.
Long-Term Impact
Our critical support varies from covering the supply of basic needs, lunch, and a snack to strengthening social skills with educational and cultural workshops, allowing children and young people to have a new perspective about the world.
