This projects goal is to purchase at least 50 pregnant goats that will be given to a vulnerable widow, orphan or a person with a disability. This gives them the ability to begin raising a small herd of goats that will provide them with a source of income. This is one of the most powerful programs we have done in Uganda. It truly changes lives.
Challenge
HIV/AIDS has wreaked havoc in the lives of thousands of families in Uganda. It has hit particularly hard in the remote villages of Northeastern Uganda. It has forced grandmothers to become mothers again to care for the children who have lost their parents. It has left thousands of widows to care for their children alone. These women are extremely vulnerable without any source of income.
Long-Term Impact
It is possible for a goat recipient over a period of 2 or 3 years to accumulate as many as 10 to 15 goats. They can sell them or they can trade 7 for a milk cow or a bull. With the proceeds we have seen scores of women pay for their children's school fees or build a hut. Some have purchased land on which to grow crops. Some have even started businesses. The local government has humbly told our NGO that we are doing things for their people that they cannot afford to do. Very appreciative.
