The micro project will provide rabbits of good breed to one self-help bank also called Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) of 20 members. The rabbits will not only improve the families' nutrition but will also diversify the farmer's incomes through rabbit sales and soil health improvement by utilizing rabbit manure which will in turn improve their farm produce. Our replication model; the first round of baby rabbits will be given to the next self-help group(s), thus ensuring continuity
Challenge
Unemployment is a major problem in Uganda. Agriculture is the main source of livelihood for the people in rural communities who depend on rain to sustain their farming. Moreover, most are subsistence farmers that have limited income sources to sustain themselves and their families. Coupled with limited education, opportunities to earn a decent living are extremely limited. Lack of markets, adverse climatic changes and poor soils have kept them in extreme cycles of poverty.
Long-Term Impact
Rabbit rearing will boost the confidence of rural farmers, contribute to soil improvement and towards reducing extreme poverty among smallholder families in Hoima district, Uganda.
