Lighthouse of Hope MK exists to provide care for orphans in North Macedonia. We are providing hope for these orphans, and their caregivers, in three primary ways: Family-Style Group Homes, Foster and Adoptive Family Support, and Education. This project seeks to see vulnerable children raised in a healthy, loving, and educational environment. We provide them with a warm, safe place with trauma-informed caregivers, giving the children the ability to form healthy attachments and relationships.

Challenge

North Macedonia is making great strides in the area of orphan care. They began the de-institutionalization process in 2017, recognizing that children need more than food and shelter to be healthy. By October of 2019, all children under the age of 3 were moved out of institutions and into government-run group homes or foster families. Group homes and fostering are still relatively new concepts here, and Lighthouse of Hope seeks to provide resources and support to help in this major transition.

Long-Term Impact

Research shows the shocking effects on children who have not had the ability to form secure attachments. Unfortunately, children from hard places struggle to build meaningful relationships, due to a lack of trust and unresolved trauma. We seek to combat those statistics and meet the child's emotional and physical needs. When these children are seen, heard, and loved, they will be able to become well-rounded adults - giving them the ability to have meaningful relationships and bright futures.
