Hospitals treat the illness, Barretstown treats the child. Barretstown offers free, medically endorsed camps and programmes that are designed for children and their families living with cancer and other serious illness - all supported behind the scenes by 24 hour on site medical and nursing care. Our programmes are designed to rebuild confidence and self-esteem through activities that foster growth, development, and independence.

Challenge

For a child diagnosed with cancer or any other serious illnesses there are devastating consequences. They and their family are been plunged into a world of treatments and hospitals where normal family life is put on hold. Treatment can last for years and during this time children have to grow up too fast and miss out on large parts of their childhood.

Long-Term Impact

Since Barretstown first opened its doors in 1994 The Therapeutic Recreation programme has served over 60,000 campers. Children take part in fun, entertaining and exciting challenges. They experience success in overcoming these challenges. They reflect on their experiences and make discoveries about their true potential. And most importantly they go home with increased confidence, self-esteem, independence and new friendships.
