84% of Liberians live in extreme poverty and over 50% of the population is under the age of 18. RESTORE HOPE: LIBERIA supports disadvantaged children in the remote Kolahun District with healthcare, education, and economic opportunity. Providing healthcare and teaching children to read are two of the most fundamental interventions to overcome poverty. Disadvantaged children-orphaned, disabled, chronically ill-are more likely to escape poverty if they are healthy, educated, and skilled.

Challenge

60% of Liberians are illiterate. 14 years of civil war and the worst Ebola epidemic in history have devastated Liberia's health and education sectors. The end of the war left a country in which 2 of every 5 children would not survive to their fifth birthday. In the wake of Ebola, there is just 1 clinician for every 1,000 people and the pharmacies are often empty. Most young people cannot read or write at their grade level, if at all, and few teachers have satisfactory skills.

Long-Term Impact

Our approach is holistic, and our interventions are integrated to ensure maximum impact. By training tutors, supporting the local health system, and providing microfinance and business skills training to the Women's Weaving Cooperative, we are not only investing in individuals, but we are investing in a community's future. The tutors will teach 100 students this year. The hospital serves a large geographic area and the Weaving Cooperative currently has 50 members and growing.
