The COVID-19 pandemic completely derailed the education journey for the poorest and most vulnerable children. RKF's main aim is to ensure school children in Kisumu always have access to quality education. We do this by ensuring students have access to two hot meals while at school, educational supplies like books and stationery and sanitary pads for girls. We also support the families of students with food rations

Challenge

A majority of students in Kenya will be losing the entire 2020 academic year and have to repeat their class when schools reopen in Jan 2021, if that happens. Unlike other parts of the world that have been able to use technological advancements to continue teaching and learning, educations has largely come to a standstill in Kenya due to the pandemic. No school coupled with general economic hardship leads to students engaging in child labour, higher teenage pregnancies and students dropping out.

Long-Term Impact

The project will impact nearly 2,000 students and their families (approx. 10,000 community members) to support them with food packs (equivalent cash transfers) that will serve nearly 500,000 meals to keep going during the pandemic. Furthermore, it will support at least 300 girls with sanitary hygiene products, menstrual and sex education. It will also provide education packs to help students continue learning during the pandemic so that they can easily transition into school when it resumes.
