Addiction destroys families, children and community livelihood. The International Blue Cross works with 41 member organizations to reduce substance abuse, especially among youth, and improve alcohol policies to protect our youth. We see a world where children can grow up in safe, healthy families and live free from addiction. We also see a world where people already harmed by addiction have access to treatment.

Challenge

Alcohol and drug abuse is one of the world's biggest social problems. 3.3 million people die every year due to alcohol and it contributes to more than 200 disease and injury conditions, including cancer. In Europe alone, there are 9 million children of alcoholics who face social exclusion, live in poverty or face domestic violence.

Long-Term Impact

Together with partner organizations we will influence national and global policies to ensure that our communities take action and alcohol is considered in all policy decisions. We will influence pricing and taxation, reduce alcohol-related harm, help provide access to treatment, mitigate hundreds of diseases and ensure that our youth around the globe has the chance to live a healthy, drug and alcohol-free life in more than 37 countries.
