You can change a child's life, you can provide them with education and you can help them escape the vicious poverty cycle that is a reality for many Zimbabwean orphans. Without the legal help that they need to secure basic documents, too many Zimbabwean Orphans cannot register in schools, take exams and access the benefits and inheritance that will lift them out of poverty and into a future of progress. We can change that, but we need your help.

Challenge

The project works with orphans and vulnerable children in the Bulawayo and Matabeleland Provinces of Zimbabwe to tackle problems surrounding lack of formal identity registration. Almost one third of Zimbabwean children do not possess a birth certificate. This creates a barrier which prevents children exercising many of their basic human rights, and stops them from enrolling in school and sitting formal examinations.

Long-Term Impact

The project works very closely with a number of local organisations, such as Child Protection Committees, schools, churches, and relevant government departments. As such, we are building the capacity of other organisations to deal with these problems when the project comes to an end. In addition, by raising awareness in schools, and by allowing children to participate actively in the project, the issue of lack of birth registration should not become a problem for future generations.
