For 22 years, Global Girls, Inc. has provided arts education and presentation opportunities for girls ages 5 to 18. Through rigorous performance training, youth develop essential life skills: resilience, self-analysis, self-discipline and grit. They learn ensemble, negotiation and critical thinking skills helping them succeed on stage and in life. The mission is building personal capacities that nurture individual growth and inspire girls to use their talents for positive change for all girls.
Challenge
Our programs target violence against girls, in all its forms, across their lifespans. According to the Family Violence Prevention Fund, "growing up in a violent home may be a terrifying and traumatic experience that can affect every aspect of a child's life, growth and development." Each year, 1 in 10 teenagers is violated by a boyfriend or girlfriend, and many others are sexually or emotionally abused. More than 600 women in the U.S. were raped or sexually assaulted daily in 2006.
Long-Term Impact
In our school and community based programs, we educate 500 girls annually on gender-based each year and give them a platform to express their hopes, fears, ambitions and obstacles. We are helping girls see that they don't have to be silent, but can use their voices for change. Our girls go on to and complete college. They write plays. They travel internationally. They lead clubs and organizations. They return to Global Girls as teaching artists and engage future generations of fearless girls.
