Iraqi orphans and children from poor families attend public schools in Iraq, where class sizes average of 75 students. Many of these children have physical or cognitive disabilities, but no one knows that. Imagine being deaf from birth, but not one person in your life realizes that you cannot hear. Imagine being autistic and being beaten daily because no one realizes that you are autistic. These are challenges Iraqi orphans and poor children face in their lives.
Challenge
A quality education can make the difference between a lifetime of success or a lifetime of suffering. Orphans and children from poor Iraqi families cannot afford private schools; they must use public schools, which sometimes have as many as 75 children in one classroom. Public schools lack the staff and adequate supplies, so learning is at a minimum. In addition, disabilities are rarely recognized or diagnosed, so many children don't even get a chance to go to school.
Long-Term Impact
The long-term impact of our project will allow the children to gain additional academic and emotional support so they can learn more effectively. They will also gain healthy meals and snacks which will aid in their growth and development. These gains will then allow the children to learn a skill or a trade that they can use to help support their families and to become self-sufficient as young adults.
