The Trust for Social Achievement is committed to end the preventable deaths of vulnerable children by providing ongoing support for a medical center through purchase of necessary supplies. We are partnering with a local community center in one of Sofia's most marginalized neighborhoods, as well as health care professionals who will serve in the center and provide free pre and postnatal support for marginalized and impoverished mothers.
Challenge
Thousands of first-time mothers do not have access to pre and postnatal examinations due to bureaucratic, social, and economic barriers. Bulgarian law allows uninsured mothers one free prenatal visit, but doctors are reluctant to provide the service. In the nation's capital, only one doctor last year agreed to do so. Mothers are often turned away because they lack medical insurance or do not have personal documents. Minority mothers face not only poverty, but also often discrimination.
Long-Term Impact
By providing this critical support, we will be giving vital care to more than 250 pregnant mothers and infants in the coming year. The first thousand days provide a rare opportunity to dramatically change the life outcomes of a child. Moreover, by purchasing equipment for the community health center, we will lay a strong foundation for future support for many mothers in the years to come.
