Can you imagine a fire or hurricane destroying your home and all of your belongings? Can you imagine having to flee your country and leave behind everything you own, including your framed memories? This US-based project offers free family photos to refugees, immigrants, asylum seekers, displaced people, and disaster survivors. Retake gives a little bit of hope in the form of new keepsakes and framed portraits to people who have endured so much and are now rebuilding their lives.

Challenge

When people lose their homes, have to evacuate, or flee from persecution, they also lose their possessions, family heirlooms, and ties to their history. They lose their favorite framed memories. Whether they have lost their belongings because of a disaster like Hurricane Ida in Louisiana, USA or they have had to flee their home country like the Afghan refugees currently being relocated around the world, the result is the same: they have to start over and rebuild.

Long-Term Impact

The long-term impact of gifting new keepsakes and family portraits is monumental. Their mental wellness and connection with their culture and communities is benefitted. They also are able to start the process of rebuilding and healing.
